My needs and skills

Your language needs can be varied. They may be concrete, such as writing an essay, a curriculum vitae, a letter, etc., or psychological, such as the need to overcome anxiety to feel more at ease in the language.

Before you embark on your apprenticeship, you might want to ask yourself a few questions :

  • What languages, skills and specific objectives are important to you in your studies? And in your current and future life?
  • Does your motivation affect your needs, or vice versa? If so, how?
  • Is there anything that could be useful to you but that you are avoiding? Do you find it easy to get out of your comfort zone?

Sometimes our needs are not very clear: reflecting on your learning process can help you to clarify them and define your priorities.

Taking stock of your current skills can be a starting point.

Language skills refer to what you know how to do: read, write, speak and listen. They are complemented by knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

They are also linked to your personality, your learning strategies, your motivation, the image you have of languages and your personal skills.

A self-assessment can help you to clarify/change/verify this image. This will complement the results obtained in tests or examinations.
